Should You Make Your Own Freeze Dried Food?
In an earlier post I talked about canning meat and vegetables for long term food storage. The advantage of freeze dried food is that it has a much longer shelf life. Canned meat can last 5 years, vegetables like tomatoes are about 1 to 2 years. Freeze dried food has a 25 year shelf life! By comparison; MRE’s (meals ready to eat) have a shelf life of 5 years and the taste is just OK I’m told.
The machine used in this video below is expensive so you’d have to be a serious prepper to get your money’s worth out of buying a freeze drier. However, as he pointed out in the video; the average American wastes over $2000 a year due to the food going bad or freezer burned before use.
You always have the option of buying freeze dried food ready made. Building your reserves slowly over time is all most people can do. I’ve been told that the taste of freeze dried food is very good so between canning food and having freeze dried food as part of your long term food storage sounds like a great option for me, hopefully you too.
